Alexander Spence - Oar (1969)

 

Alexander "Skip" Spence fue algo así como la versión americana de Syd Barrett. Este disco es muy particular. No solo es un gran disco, sino que el contexto en el que surge también merece mención especial.

Skip Spence era parte de una banda llamada Moby Grape, que hacían cosas del estilo folk. Ahí era guitarrista de la banda, donde también aportaba sus letras. Para la grabación del segundo disco en Nueva York, estando bajo efectos del LSD, decide entrar a la habitación del hotel de dos de sus compañeros de la banda con un hacha con el fin de matarlos. Tomá nota Kubrick.

"We had to do (the album) in New York because the producer (David Rubinson) wanted to be with his family. So we had to leave our families and spend months at a time in hotel rooms in New York City. Finally I just quit and went back to California. I got a phone call after a couple of days. They'd played a Fillmore East gig without me, and Skippy took off with some black witch afterward who fed him full of acid. It was like that scene in The Doors movie. He thought he was the anti-Christ. He tried to chop down the hotel room door with a fire axe to kill Don (Stevenson) to save him from himself. He went up to the 52nd floor of the CBS building where they had to wrestle him to the ground. And Rubinson pressed charges against him. They took him to The Tombs (and then to Bellevue) and that's where he wrote Oar. When he got out of there, he cut that album in Nashville. And that was the end of his career. They shot him full of Thorazine for six months. They just take you out of the game."

Sedado por obvias razones, Spence es llevado a un instituto psiquiátrico, donde es diagnosticado con esquizofrenia. OAR se gestaría en los seis meses que pasó allí, y el día que es dado de alta, un mito urbano dice que agarro su moto, y vestido solamente en pijamas, encaró para el estudio a grabar su disco. Obviamente, era de esperar que nadie lo acompañe en tal osada tarea, así que todos los instrumentos quedaron a cargo de Spence.

Musicalmente hablando, los temas tienen una fuerte dosis de folk y psicodelia. El disco refleja todo sentimiento de angustia y soledad, sobre todo en su voz, con letras que a veces no se terminan de entender, con una voz carente de espíritu. Luego, Skip haría participaciones esporádicas en Moby Grape y no mucho más. Fallece en 1999, cuando se reedita el disco agregandole alrededor de 10 bonus tracks y un disco tributo a Oar, interpretado por conocidos como Robert Plant, Beck, entre otros.
